Samsung announced today that mass production has begun on their new 1.8-inch and 2.5-inch Solid State Disks (SSDs). They have a capacity of either 64GB or 128GB and are faster, more reliable and use less power than traditional hard disk drives.
Being based on Multi Level Cell (MLC) NAND technology, we can expect these SSDs to be more competitively priced than Single Level Cell (SLC) based drives.
Power consumption is a remarkably low 0.2 watts in standby and 0.5 watts when active. As for performance, you can expect write speeds of 70MB/s and 90MB/s when reading.
Samsung claims its new SSD will last 20 times longer than a typical notebook PC hard drive, ensuring a death by obsolescence rather than failure.
To add to the good news, Samsung also announced that its 256GB SSD will be heading for mass production by the end of this year.
