The innovative display company AU Optronics have again put their creativity to work, producing and unveiling a 2.2-inch ‘No Frame’ LCD. The display cleverly refracts light emitted from the edges to make the frame appear invisible. Thursday, 30 October 2008
Could this be the shape of things to come for Heliplane design? This unique, single fixed-wing craft is called the Challis Heliplane and is capable of flying faster than Jet Man at over 300mph. At this stage the aircraft is only a small-scale Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), but it is a working model for a safe, high-speed, full-scale Heliplane that would be suitable for both civilian and military use, due to its ability to make emergency power-off landings. Here’s a neat gadget that’s ideal for fiddly reassembly jobs. Called the Finger Grip Socket Set, it essentially straps a nut (or a bolt) to your finger which won’t break free until properly threaded. Samsung has developed a new OLED display that is so thin, it literally flaps in the wind. The 4-inch “Flapping Display” is just 0.05mm thick, can produce 480×272 pixels with a 100,000:1 contrast ratio and reproduce 100% of the NTSC color gamut, making the picture quality comparable to that of most flat-panel displays on the market. Researchers from the University of Ulm in Germany have discovered a new use for red LEDs (light emitting diodes) that is potentially much more valuable than their current use as indicators in electronics or clusters for modern lighting.
