NEC LaVie Light: Latest Super-Compact Netbook

NEC have announced that they too will be competing in the growing Netbook market with their new “LaVie” brand, which is set to include super-compact and ultra-lightweight sub-notebooks. The first model, the LaVie Light, features fairly standard specs for this market but the extra competition is always welcome, helping to drive prices lower.

The machine is quite plain in appearance, especially when you’ve been looking at shots of the new MacBooks for the past couple of days. That’s excusable though, with the big focus on price and features, aesthetics have so far only played a small role in this market.

The netbook offers up an 8.9-inch display (slightly smaller than the Eee PC 1000), Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz processor, 160GB hard drive, 1GB RAM, 1.3 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, 3 x USB 2.0 ports as well as an SD memory port.

Dimensions are 9.84 x 6.94 x 1.43 inches (250 x 176.5 x 36.5mm) with a weight of just 2.58lbs (1.17kgs). This neat little unit will be out in Japan by mid-November and will set you back 64,890 Yen ($640).
