Rice University Creates Graphite Memory Just 10 Atoms Thick

Researchers at Houston’s Rice University have demonstrated a new medium for data storage, which is made out of a mere 10 atom thick layer of graphite. The technology has huge implications not only for advancing the capacities of flash memory, but also for space exploration with its ability to withstand radiation and temperatures of -75 to 200 degrees Celsius, that would destroy modern Solid State Disks.

Toshiba 512GB 2.5-inch SSDs Mark A World First

Toshiba have today announced a new line of flash-based 2.5-inch notebook SSDs that mark an industry first with a top storage capacity of 512GB. The drives are based on 43 nanometer Multi-Level Cell NAND and will be displayed at the upcoming CES 2009 in January.

Solar Sunglasses Concept Could Power Gadgets…Maybe.

What’s not to love about a gadget that can provide free electricity to your portable devices on-the-go? That’s the thinking behind these solar panel-packing sunglasses. Called the Self-Energy Generating Glasses, or confusingly SIG, this alien-eyewear will supposedly collect energy from sunlight and transfer it to a cellphone or iPod via a power jack at the end of one of the arms.

EcoFont: Free Typeface Uses Holes To Cut Ink Usage

A Dutch company called Spranq have come up with an interesting typeface that aims to reduce printer ink usage by omitting numerous tiny circles from the center of each letter. Called EcoFont, it was inspired by holey Dutch cheese and is the result of an effort to cut down on ink use while simultaneously maintaining readability.

Piezoelectric Road Will Generate Electricity From Moving Cars

Scientists in Israel have apparently been hard at work engineering a stretch of road with embedded piezoelectric crystals, that will generate electricity from cars rolling across its surface. The road will be unveiled in a few weeks by Israeli company, Innowattech.

Buffalo Japan today introduced a new line of flash drives with capacities of up to 16GB in an enclosure no more than 8mm thin. There are thinner drives out there such as the tiny iRiver Domino, but they don’t come close to offering this amount of storage.
