Spaceport America, the world’s first (purpose-built) commercial spaceport broke ground recently in New Mexico and thanks to design winners Foster and Partners, we have some concept images representing just what the giant 110,000 square foot facility may look like. The project is expected to cost $200m and if all goes according to plan, is expected to host the first commercial space flight by 2011. Read More… Monday, 11 May 2009
If you’re just itching to get your feet off the ground, but haven’t the patience or the money for a personal flying car, there is another option. Thanks to the Martin Jetpack, you could be soaring through the skies (a la Jet Man) as soon as late 2009 for no more than the cost of a luxury car (video below). Read More… Wednesday, 18 March 2009
Remember Terrafugia’s Transition Flying Car we saw back in December? Well, today the company let us all in on details about a successful first test flight that took place earlier this month. The achievement brings our dreams of a production flying car that much closer to reality, even if the $194,000 price tag prevents most of us from ever owning one. Read More… Friday, 13 March 2009
Here’s a novel concept that manages to merge old tech with new, in a very exciting and beneficial way. An innovative, reusable spaceplane called the Skylon is set to hit the skies within 10 years, aiming to make payload delivery and perhaps even passenger space travel easier and more affordable. The rocket-plane would take-off and land on a traditional runway and use a combination of on-board hydrogen and oxygen taken from the atmosphere to provide thrust. The Skycar is an interesting personal aviation project under development by Calfornian company, Moller International. Their flying car is much more than just a concept or even a base prototype like the one we saw on ebay recently. Testing is already underway (video below) and FAA approved models are expected to be available to the public before 2015. Read More… Thursday, 30 October 2008
Could this be the shape of things to come for Heliplane design? This unique, single fixed-wing craft is called the Challis Heliplane and is capable of flying faster than Jet Man at over 300mph. At this stage the aircraft is only a small-scale Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), but it is a working model for a safe, high-speed, full-scale Heliplane that would be suitable for both civilian and military use, due to its ability to make emergency power-off landings. Ian Poll, head of the UK Government-funded Omega Project which aims to reduce environmental damage from aviation, is pushing for research to help convert the aviation industry from carbon-based fuels to nuclear-energy. Read More… Friday, 24 October 2008
The Audi Calamaro is a futuristic concept car designed by Tibor, a Hungarian design student. Its mad futuristic styling seems to cross a dolphin, a speed boat and a jet fighter and I can’t help but draw a comparison to the awesome Seabreacher submarine.
