Fans of Back to the Future will recall a scene in which Marty McFly, having recently arrived in 1955, visits his scientist friend Doc Brown and is immediately confronted by said individual wearing a ridiculous contraption on his head. That ridiculous contraption is a mind-reading device, intended to allow Doc to read other people’s thoughts – and it doesn’t work. The Emotiv EPOC Neuroheadset, on the other hand, is a mind-reading device that is intended to read your own thoughts and transmit them. And it does work.

That’s right: put this on your head and the sensors will detect electrical signals from your brain, and (presumably) after calibration, pick up your inner thoughts and emotions and transmit them wirelessly to your PC. While not typically known for their pointing peripherals, Verbatim recently released a line of small, portable notebook mice that should make your mobile computing more productive. Called the Color Nano Wireless Notebook Mouse, it features a tiny USB dongle / receiver that is designed to be left in your USB port without risk of snapping off, making setting up easier when working on-the-go.

Like the Lingo Wireless Mouse we’ve seen previously, Verbatim’s Color Nano Wireless Notebook Mouse also includes a small storage space in the mouse itself for the USB dongle (in case you run out of ports and can’t leave it plugged in). Following on from the tiny Z-Nano and the Ultra-Slim Optical Bluetooth Mouse, comes this little gem from Japan. Called the Lingo, it is claimed to be the world’s smallest wireless mouse and with dimensions of 27.5mm (1.08″) x 60mm (2.36″) x 19mm (0.75″), that’s not too difficult to believe.

The 800dpi Lingo Wireless Mouse gets a range of about 10m, around 15 hours of battery life and operates at a frequency of 2.4Ghz. The tiny USB 2.0 receiver appears to have a housing within the mouse too for when it’s not in use. A good idea, as it looks real easy to lose.

The Lingo is expected to go on sale in Japan next month for $50, but keep an eye on stores like Japan Trend Shop who may release it locally.

Evolution? Not quite. But certainly one of the most morbid hacks I’ve ever seen. Combining the body of a real mouse, with the functionality of the peripheral variety this Mouse Mouse sports a scroll wheel, USB connectivity and an optical sensor – though I was kind of expecting a double trackball.

Not a good gift idea for the squeamish, or cat owners – but if you’re inquistive, there’s a step-by-step breakdown of the whole project and video over at Instructables.
