Apple unveiled a new, fifth-generation iPod Nano at their “It’s Only Rock and Roll” media event yesterday – which includes a built-in video camera with accompanying microphone and speaker, a larger 2.2-inch display as well as a shiny, polished aluminum casing.

The new Nano 5G also features a built-in FM radio, which is great for listeners, but surely bad for third-party manufacturers who have produced FM receiver add-ons almost since the iPod’s inception. The radio feature does include a new and very useful Live Pause function however, that holds a buffer of up to 15 minutes – enabling you to pause and resume live radio. Also included is an iTunes tagging feature (U.S. only), which makes it easy to keep track of the songs you hear and like on the radio for later purchase.

The much-rumored addition of a video camera to the Nano is likely the biggest selling point for the 5th-Gen model and offers up 640 x 480 VGA resolution at 30fps with AAC audio. Located on the back in the bottom-left corner, the camera is unfortunately for video only as the tiny CMOS sensor is incapable of decent quality stills – but there are a bunch of included effects to play with including Black and White, Sepia, X-Ray, Thermal, Film Grain, Security Cam, Cyborg, Kaleido, Bulge, Mirror, Motion Blur, Light Tunnel, Dent, Stretch and Twirl.

The 5G Nano also includes the VoiceOver feature introduced on the current model iPod Shuffle, that tells you the artist and track name without you having to look at the display.

Apple’s iPod Nano 5G is available in black, silver, blue, green, purple, orange and pink at $149 for the 8GB and $179 for the 16GB version. Additional yellow and red models will be sold exclusively through the Apple Store and official retail shops, but if they’re not your color – you can pick up one of the standard seven from MacMall and get free engraving, a charger and a $40 Altec Lansing iPod speaker thrown in.
