Asus is showing off a “Community Designed PC” concept at CeBIT 2009, that incorporates two touchscreen panels in a “FlipBook” style design. The dual-panel notebook aims to offer a more flexible and intuitive working space by incorporating a virtual touchpad and keyboard, as well as gesture control and handwriting recognition. Friday, 13 June 2008 Asus launched its Eee PC range in Taiwan just two days ago and already we have a video of an unboxing and official U.S. pricing. The pricing on all models is higher than predicted. The Eee PC 901 is fixed at $599 MSRP for both the Linux and Windows XP versions. The 1000 and 1000H models could change in price but is currently set at $699 for the Eee PC 1000 with either Windows XP or Linux. The Eee PC 1000H (H, meaning hard disk drive) is set at $649. The pricing may drop in the near future as the Eee PC will face some stiff competition from the likes of MSI’s Wind, due out later this summer at $399. There is also Acer’s Aspire One at $400 and Dell’s E-series due September or earlier at $299. TweakTown managed to get their hands on a 1000H model and filmed the unboxing. See video below. The G50V sports a 15.6-inch display, Intel’s Centrino 2 platform, a pair of 320GB SATA drives, support for up to 4GB DDR2 RAM, 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9700M GT graphics card and a tough keyboard built for gamers. Possibly the most exciting feature of the G50V is the 3D display, a feature that can be toggled on or off. Like the 3D televisions we’re starting to see, you don’t need special glasses to pull off the effect – you do need to look fairly straight ahead however. The larger G71V has a 17-inch display and shares the same platform and GPU as its sibling. It differs by supporting a pair of 500GB drives, CPU overclocking and DDR3 memory. Both models should be released shortly after the official release of Intel’s Centrino 2 platform. Pricing has also been released which could see the 1000-series starting at $625. The new sub-notebook is being shown at the Computex Information Technology show in Taiwan which began today. It will offer screen size and resolution superior to that of the first Eee laptop as well as a keyboard that is 92% the size of an average laptop keyboard which should please users who found the keyboard on the first model too small. Asus claims the new model will offer up to 7.5 hours of battery life (3.2 hours min.) thanks to a new 6-cell battery. The Eee PC 1000 will have a maximum capacity of 40GB on its SSD and will be Linux based. The Eee PC 1000(H) will offer a choice of either a 40GB SSD or an 80GB traditional hard disk and will run on either Windows XP or Linux. Both models will support a maximum of 2GB DDR2 memory and feature Intel’s new 1.6GHz Atom CPU. They will include 802.11n wireless networking as well as Bluetooth connectivity. A 1.3MP webcam will be included and they will be available in a wider range of colours than the previous model. Asus has sold more than 1 million Eee PC units since the Eee’s launch in October 2007. “With constant innovations and implementation of the latest technologies in the new Eee PC range, we have since expanded the original 3 ‘E’s into ‘Easy’, ‘Excellent’ and ‘Exciting’. ‘Easy’ will still encompass the core value of Easy to learn, work and play, ‘Excellent’ will highlight the Eee PC’s role as an Excellent mobile Internet device, and ‘Exciting’ entails utilizing the Eee PC for Exciting multimedia enjoyment.” says Jerry Shen, CEO of Asus.
