Scientists in Israel have apparently been hard at work engineering a stretch of road with embedded piezoelectric crystals, that will generate electricity from cars rolling across its surface. The road will be unveiled in a few weeks by Israeli company, Innowattech. Tuesday, 9 December 2008
Japan is experimenting with an interesting method of generating clean and inexpensive electricity. They are essentially harnessing the power of pedestrian footfalls with a piezoelectric electronic mat, which is capable of generating an impressive 0.5W every time someone weighing around 60kg (132lbs) steps on it. Friday, 14 November 2008 This clever little mud-powered LED light was created by Marieke Staps and is named, quite simply, the Soil Lamp. It features mud-filled cells made of copper and zinc, which conduct electricity produced in the wet soil to the LED. Gremaud has shown that a lightweight alloy of the metals magnesium, nickel and titanium is fantastic at storing hydrogen and offers an alternative to the hydrogen sponge also in development. Tuesday, 28 October 2008 Ian Poll, head of the UK Government-funded Omega Project which aims to reduce environmental damage from aviation, is pushing for research to help convert the aviation industry from carbon-based fuels to nuclear-energy. Friday, 17 October 2008 Japanese telecommunications giant, NTT, have developed a pair of prototype shoes that generate electricity when you walk. The shoes produce 1.2 watts, which is enough energy to power your iPod forever – as long as you don’t stop walking. | SUBSCRIBE: Stay up to date!
