HP Voodoo Envy 133 Notebook Thinner Than MacBook Air

HP has announced an overhauled version of their Voodoo notebook line which steals the title of “world’s thinnest notebook away from Apple’s MacBook Air.

The new version does away with its gaming focus in favour of a small, sleek notebook with a 13.3-inch display and an all-carbon fibre chassis. It is just .70-inch thick, bettering the Air’s thickest point of .76-inch.

The Envy 133 features an instant-on Voodoo IOS mode that enables a user to go from power off to web browsing almost instantly. Users can also look at photos, chat and make Skype calls without loading Microsoft Windows which is a big plus for people on the go.

The instant-on feature utilises a lightweight version of Linux and includes an optimised version of Firefox for web browsing, Pidgeon for instant messaging to virtually any IM platform plus a photo gallery and music player application.

The power adapter is quite large but it also serves as a WiFi access point. The notebook is too thin to house an ethernet port, so it is built right into the power adapter.

The 133’s base configuration will start at $2,099 in a black carbon fibre finish. A white version will also be available at launch.

Sony’s New Laptop Cuts Keyboard In Half

Sony has released a brand new laptop called the VAIO VGC-LJ25L which has a 15.4 inch wide display but only half a keyboard. This design is not a prototype.

This laptop seems to be a substitute PC for around the home like in the kitchen for example. The company says it will make it easier to work in confined or narrow spaces. More ideal for quickly Googling something than working at for hours on end.

It has already launched in Korea with a 2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 processor, 2GB of DDR2 memory, integrated X3100 graphics card (for simple tasks only – not for gaming), 200GB hard disk and dual-layer DVD burner. It features a built-in camera, a microphone plus built-in speakers and woofer.

It is priced in Australia and Japan at around £1360/$2720.

Samsung to cease making laptops

Samsung’s laptop division is set to cease all operations if market share doesn’t improve by 2011, according to one of the company’s senior managers.

They are looking to reach 5.7 percent market share which means an additional 11 million units must be sold worldwide by 2011. This would seem impossible when you look at the figures – market share worldwide for Samsung has only grown from 1.2 percent in 2005 to 1.7 percent in 2007.

Sony is Samsung’s nearest competitor with 6 percent market share and is the one they must overtake in order to stay afloat. Other competitors are well ahead with Toshiba at 10 percent, Dell at 14 percent, Acer at 16 percent and Hewlett-Packard at 23 percent.

There is some amusing irony to this story. Even if Samsung does cease their laptop operations, they’ll still be in the business, supplying Sony with many of the components in their laptops including the LCD panels.
