GM/Vauxhall: A Car That Knows The Speed Limit

GM’s British division, Vauxhall, have developed a camera system which displays the current speed limit right in the dash, helping you avoid costly fines and confrontations with intimidating cops.

The camera snaps 30 photos a second so even if you get distracted and miss a sign, you know the camera caught it. It scans the pictures using image recognition software which detects any speed limit signs and sends the current limit to the dash.

The kit is an optional feature on Vauxhall’s upcoming Insignia sedan (below), and will be the basis for GM’s new midsize sedans in around 2010.

It sounds like a great idea, and one that could be developed further. There are lots of standardized signs the software could look out for that could be just as beneficial to the driver as the current speed limit. It will be interesting to see how this technology develops.
