The BBC has announced plans to digitise its entire archive so that it can be shown online.
Every show will have its own dedicated page featuring facts and information and when that’s complete, the episodes will be added and likely accessed through the BBC iPlayer.
“Eventually we will add our programme back catalogue to produce pages for programming stretching back over nearly 80 years – featuring all the information we have on the richest TV and radio archive in the world, said Jana Bennett, the director of BBC Vision.
The ‘playback plan’ will be developed under the BBC online budget.
The idea for a digital archive was proposed and announced as far back as 2003. The BBC is in a much better position today to make such an undertaking with technology such as the iPlayer now in place.
