Samsung Unveils 14.7MP TL34HD Point-and-Shoot Camera

Samsung has today made its new TL34HD digital camera official. The compact point-and-shoot will feature high-definition video recording, an impressive 14.7 megapixels of resolution and a renowned Schneider 28mm lens with 3.6x optical zoom.

Samsung says it’s the most advanced point-and-shoot in the company’s history and will come in a very slim form factor too, measuring just 3.68″ x 2.34″ x 0.80″.

The back of the camera is dominated by a 3-inch touchscreen hVGA LCD which uses Samsung’s Smart Touch 2.0 interface to improve user navigation. The LCD has a high resolution of 460K pixels and a new anti-reflection coating to improve visibility and usability.

The software adds a new feature taken from the desktop. A recycling bin. This may be useful for people who accidently delete a lot of images, but generally could be quite an annoying addition.

The body is an all-metal build and will be available in either all-black or silver with red accents. It will be available in September this year for $329.95 MSRP.

Mac Tablet Concept Is Sleek, Sexy, Very Desirable

Designer Isamu Sanada has come up with a very appealing tablet computer concept that combines the interactivity of the iPhone with the elegance of the MacBook Air.

The design incorporates a 13.3-inch widescreen LCD and would feature mobile connectivity features such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS.

It would require no keyboard as everything could be accessed via touch or stylus, but with a full range of inputs, you could attach a keyboard for more comfortable typing when at home.

The concept just screams Apple and looks exactly as we’d expect from an official design. It is a realistic production candidate too, given existing technologies and a real-world, purchasable example in the form of Axiotron’s Modbook.

Flybook V5 Mini-Notebook Now In America

The Flybook V5 luxury notebook has just been launched in America after a successful run in Europe. This unique and feature packed lappie is priced at MacBook Air levels but offers more features and higher specs.

The Flybook can be used as a tablet PC and includes a swivel touch screen for this purpose. Many other tablets force users to use a stylus as they can’t properly track human touch.

It features an Intel Core 2 Duo Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) processor with 2GB Memory and an 80GB HDD. It has a 1024 x 600 resolution WXGA TFT LCD display with a built-in 1.3 Megapixel camera.

The notebook includes a finger-print scanner for user authentication and can be used with HSDPA/EDGE/UMTS/GPRS and GSM wireless networks. It has Bluetooth and WLAN as well as two USB 2.0 ports.

The battery is a swappable 6-cell Lithium-Ion and when fitted, brings the total weight of the system to just 1200g.

Dimensions are 235 x 163 x 30mm and for those who don’t fancy the bright gold casing – black, silver and pink models are also available. With a price tag of around $3000, you can be sure it’s not looking to compete with low-cost notebooks like the Eee PC.

Flybook says they are already working on a new version that will be seen in late November. Its main feature being a screen that can be read in bright daylight.

Firefox Mobile Concept Shown On Video

Mozilla Labs has released a video that demonstrates the new Firefox mobile concept (Fennec), that aims to improve web navigation, organisation of tabs and reduce typing on mobile devices.

The concept focuses on providing as much space for content as is possible while providing features that reduce the need for typing.

The video explains the direction Mozilla Labs is taking but the concept will not necessarily be released in its present form. They are looking for feedback and suggestions on its usability and hope to inspire creative participation to look for other alternatives and directions.

Firefox mobile will be designed for touch screen use with a finger and will be focused on single touch, as opposed to multitouch. It will also run on non-touchscreen devices to ensure the highest level of compatibility.

Windows 7 To Feature Touchscreen Technology

Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer have presented a demo of the new Windows 7, which will feature touchscreen technology much like Apple’s iPhone.

The presentation was made at the Wall Street Journal’s D: All Things Digital conference that ends on Thursday. Included below is a video that shows all the “new” features that were demonstrated at D.

With the new Windows 7, it would seem that the team at Microsoft have switched their inspirational focus from Apple’s Mac OS X (obviously emulated to create the disappointing Windows Vista) to Apple’s iPhone OS.

Microsoft has named the touchscreen technology “Multitouch”, from the ability to perform multiple actions simultaneously. It is the biggest addition to the new OS and will be available system-wide. The screen used in the demo is made by Tyco Electronics. Their Elo TouchSystems are already used in computer kiosks.

A number of applications that could use the Multitouch technology were shown in the demonstration. These included a photography application that enables simpler handling, resizing and positioning of images. There was also an on-screen piano keyboard that showed off the software’s responsiveness.

There are a number of hand motions included in the OS such as pinch-to-zoom and touch-to-flip that anyone who’s used an iPhone will recognise. The mapping application is like a cross between Google Maps and the Maps application on the iPhone.

The taskbar is new, resembling a pie-shaped menu that lays out options in radial slices which apparently makes it faster to navigate.

While touch technology works well on portable devices, is it actually going to be useful for desktop computing? In an interesting rant on Silicon Alley Insider, usability is questioned. “Do you really want to wave your arms in the air when you could rest them comfortable on the keyboard?” the article asks.

To the disappointment of many, Microsoft’s Windows 7 will not be a re-write, contrary to some speculation. It will utilise the same kernel as its Vista operating system with one of its design goals being complete backwards-compatibility with Vista.
