Not content with its large share of the gaming console market, Nintendo have revealed plans to launch a TV channel called Wiinoma for its Wii platform in Japan this year with international expansion under consideration. Thursday, 28 August 2008 Sony have announced their 40-inch KDL-40ZX1, which takes the title of the world’s thinnest LCD TV with a thickness of only 9.9mm. Not quite the 0.3mm of their OLED, but getting there. The 1080p set features 120hz MotionFlow technology for better quality fast-motion sequences as well as Sony’s Bravia Engine 2. Tuesday, 19 August 2008 Getting tired of jamming cell phone signals for kicks? Introducing the TV-B-Gone. Just like the name implies, it gives you the power to shut off just about any TV from up to 328ft/100m away, taking your hi-jinks to a whole new level. Friday, 4 July 2008 Sharp will be showcasing its new 26-inch solar powered LCD TV at the G8 (Hokkaido Toyako) summit which begins Monday. The set is designed for the third world where access to electricity is scarce but could also be used in the first world to cut energy use. The 26-inch set is stylish and very modern with a thickness of just 20mm. It has a 10000:1 contrast ratio and consumes 30% less power than its low-power rivals, enabling it to be powered solely by an accompanying 26-inch solar panel. Though designed for people earning less than $2 a day, it doesn’t seem like the cost of such a high-tech unit would be within their reach. Even if supplied through a charity organization, the price would need to be very low to supply the estimated 1.6 billion people below the poverty line. Anyway, it’s an interesting development and quite an achievement that may prove popular in developed countries also. The sets are only 39mm (1.5-inches) deep with a maximum depth of 74mm (2.9-inches) at the center. Both models consume less power and weigh less than typical LCD TVs. The two new sets will have 1920 x 1080p resolution, an HDMI interface with three inputs, S-Video / VGA port and a TV tuner. The 42-inch LT-421L89 and 46-inch LT-46SL89 will cost around $1,899.99 and $2,399.99 respectively. Source: Wednesday, 25 June 2008 Mitsubishi has announced an autumn / fall launch for its new laser TV technology called LaserVue. The sets will be available in 65-inch and 73-inch models and could prove to be the most energy efficient displays on the market. Mitsubishi is being very quiet about how the technology works but have been quick to point out its advantages over competing technologies. The displays run at 120Hz with 500cd/m² of brightness and have a 200 percent color gamut which is more than double that of traditional HDTVs. Another plus is that these Laser TVs draw less than 200 watts which is a third of that used by plasma sets and half that used by LCD displays. Pricing is expected to be similar to that of Plasma and LCD sets so keep an eye out. Source: Thursday, 19 June 2008 The Mitsubishi Design Center in Japan has teamed up with Ashcraft Design to bring us a 50″ concept display that looks to integrate itself with interior trends in the U.S. It is obvious the designers were thinking outside the box with this set, doing away with boxy styling in favor of sleek curves. Quite an achievement when the display itself must be flat. The design also offers up a new feature. LCD monitor modules slide out from the side on command that can link up with video cameras for surveillance, child monitoring or even two-way video communications. I would love to see this display in person, it seems very nicely finished. Apparently there is a little Mitsubishi logo embedded in the glass and the edges illuminated with a soft blue light. Source: Wednesday, 21 May 2008 Philips has revealed an impressive three-dimensional television at its annual presentation of corporate research. The television can show 3D video to the naked eye without the need for special glasses to pull off the effect. The prototype, called WOWvx, works by combining slightly different angles of the same image to produce video with different depths. Tiny lenses are placed over each of the millions of sub-pixels in the screen which project light at one of nine angles through the front of the display. This process sends slightly different images to the left and right eyes to create the effect and can do so regardless of the angle you’re watching it from. Philips will initially be selling a 42″ version to retailers who can create 3D ads that will grab the attention of shoppers passing-by. The television cannot take off, however, until sufficient content is developed, so Philips are working on technology for automated 2D to 3D conversion as well as for dedicated 3D creation. Also at the presentation, Philips showed models of a low-energy water purifier (aimed at developing countries) plus a flat light that until turned on, is transparent like ordinary glass. The screen is a monster – 82 inches in size with a refresh rate of 120Hz and ultra definition (UD) resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. The UD set is double the resolution of full HD (1920 x 1080) in both width and height, effectively making it four times the size. The refresh rate of 120 Hz is at the cutting edge for LCD TVs, although, Samsung will be releasing new technology in 2011 called ‘Blue Phase TV’ that will double the refresh rate to 240Hz. According to Kim Sang-soo, executive vice president of Samsung’s LCD Technology Center, “This 82-inch LCD is large enough to cover all viewing angles with ultra-definition resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate that will allow viewers to watch motion pictures as if they are really in them.” “I personally hope the next-generation ultra-high definition level in the LCD panel market will open soon, with increasing consumer demand for clear viewing in households and public spaces,’’ said Sang-soo.
