Living in a bubble sure has its advantages – isolation and a controlled environment spring to mind – but sometimes you need a change of scenery and the mobility to achieve that. It looks like designer David Miguel Moreira Gonçalves has addressed this drawback with his Scarab vehicle concept.

It’s not just adults that appreciate fine automobile design and that’s something Mercedes seems to have caught on to. Their latest creation is a limited edition, tot-sized, ride-on version of their SLK AMG called the Bobby Benz, which joins their smaller, made-to-order model cars aimed squarely at this neglected audience of car aficionados.

The Audi Calamaro is a futuristic concept car designed by Tibor, a Hungarian design student. Its mad futuristic styling seems to cross a dolphin, a speed boat and a jet fighter and I can’t help but draw a comparison to the awesome Seabreacher submarine.

Mercedes-Benz have developed a shark-like concept car called the Formula Zero, which looks more at home in the water than on the race track for which it was designed. The car is a solar-powered green-machine, supposedly inspired by Formula One and Yacht Racing. What it actually looks like is a cross between a shark, a vehicle and the USS Voyager.

Have you ever been torn between your love of both cars and bikes? You can’t beat the thrill of riding a motorbike, but when the weather is terrible, don’t you just long for the comfort of a car? Alvino Design has come up with a solution in the form of their Proxima car/bike hybrid concept.
The Proxima is a stunning vehicle that looks like a hotrod at the front and a motorcycle at the rear. The cabin has 2 tandem seats for a motorcycle-like seating arrangement but instead of being exposed to the elements, are tucked inside a fully-enclosed cabin. Apart from providing comfortable, all-weather riding, it should also improve aerodynamics considerably.
The wheel arrangement might be seen to offer less maneuverability than a traditional motorcycle, but at the same time could present a whole new level of excitement and capabilities.
If you’re into odd-shaped vehicles, this should definitely be up your alley. For those who are not, you’ve got to appreciate the elegant tapering that makes this car a work of art.

The M-Please-V (don’t ask), is an eco car that was designed for the Peugeot Design Contest. It seats up to nine passengers and features fully-open sides to maximize their “exposure to the outside environment”. If by ‘outside environment’ they mean coarse pavement passing by at rapid speed, I guarantee you’ll feel exposure and more should you fall or be pushed over the flimsy side rail.
The MPV acronym would more aptly stand for Maximum Pain Vehicle as opposed to its ridiculously long Multi-Purpose-lightweight-economic-and-simplistic-electric-Vehicle. It is powered by batteries stored under the cabin to maximize internal space, which is crucial as it’s designed to be used for public transport. It is also designed so that the interior can be hosed down to get rid of all the dirt, sand or mud that will inevitably enter the cabin of this open design.
If it ever goes into production and you find yourself in one, keep your eye on that guy behind you.

GM’s British division, Vauxhall, have developed a camera system which displays the current speed limit right in the dash, helping you avoid costly fines and confrontations with intimidating cops.
The camera snaps 30 photos a second so even if you get distracted and miss a sign, you know the camera caught it. It scans the pictures using image recognition software which detects any speed limit signs and sends the current limit to the dash.
The kit is an optional feature on Vauxhall’s upcoming Insignia sedan (below), and will be the basis for GM’s new midsize sedans in around 2010.
It sounds like a great idea, and one that could be developed further. There are lots of standardized signs the software could look out for that could be just as beneficial to the driver as the current speed limit. It will be interesting to see how this technology develops.
