Samsung announced today a new mobile handset, the W510, that is made from a natural material extracted from corn – a world first for phones.

The W510 was introduced at the World IT Show in Seoul, where Samsung is showing off its efforts to develop materials from renewable sources that are more eco-friendly. Plastic for cell phones is usually made from petroleum.

Samsung has not stopped with the casing either, the new handset is also void of heavy metals such as Cadmium, Mercury or Lead which are toxic and still found in many electronics products.

Details have not yet been released about the phone but from the image we can see that it will likely be a mid-range phone with camera and flash, have a large screen and mobile TV capabilities.

The W510 will be released in South Korea this month (June) for an unspecified price.

Samsung will be releasing a tri-band GSM handset called the F268 at the same time which will be free of BFSs (Brominated Flame Retardants) and PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride). It will have a 2.1-inch display, 2MP camera, Bluetooth 2.0, FM radio, Media Player, WAP Browser plus microSD and USB support.
