Biological Computers On Horizon: World’s First Artificial DNA

A team of Japanese scientists have created the world’s first strand of DNA which is made entirely from artificial bases. The creation is a giant leap forward in the development of DNA data storage and possibly even parallel processing.

The achievement was reported in the Journal of the American Chemical Society and will hopefully spark investment in this very promising field.

The use of DNA for data storage could enable devices that have a much greater storage capacity, yet a much smaller footprint than today’s hard disk drives or solid state memory. This development would inevitably lead to smaller but more powerful gadgets and computers.

The discovery could also prove to be a great advancement in nanotechnology which could assist us in everything from microprocessor design to medical treatments.
