AU Optronics Unveils “No-Frame” LCD Display

The innovative display company AU Optronics have again put their creativity to work, producing and unveiling a 2.2-inch ‘No Frame’ LCD. The display cleverly refracts light emitted from the edges to make the frame appear invisible.

The panel is being exhibited in two different portable devices at Japan’s FPD (Flat Panel Display) International exhibition which ends today. The first (below) is fitted to a cell phone and highlights how the technology improves upon the viewable area of the screen. The second (above) flaunts its ability to create almost seamless images when the displays are placed side-by-side.

The LCD itself is apparently a common product, with the “No-Frame” effect provided by a transparent plastic lens placed on top. That should make for inexpensive production at least. AUO has declined to comment on the thickness of the plastic lens or the contrast ratio, though they have let slip that the resolution is 320 x 240 (QVGA) with a luminence of 300cd/m2.
