Firefox 3 Launch Date Announced – Help Set A World Download Record

Mozilla has set the date for its official Firefox 3 launch, when the open source community hopes to achieve a world record for the most downloads ever in one day.

Firefox 3 will be available from Tuesday 17th June unless a serious bug is uncovered that cannot be fixed in time. The launch has been dubbed Download Day.

According to Mozilla, the latest version of their Internet browser contains 14,000 improvements including 5,000 customised browsing add-ons. It also has an innovative new bookmarking system and is said to be quicker and more stable.

On Download Day, Mozilla hopes for 1.6 million downloads within the first 24 hours. This will be enough to set the new Guinness world record.

Over a million pledges have been made to download the software and participate in the event.

Firefox has anywhere from a 20 to 30 per cent share of the browser market and is the most popular alternative browser (alternative meaning downloaded by choice).

Personally, I can’t wait for the new version and will definitely download it on the day. Some of the new features look fantastic and with the promised performance increases, my only criticism of Firefox should be addressed. Looking forward to it.
